Under the overall supervision of Cédric Fayolle, MPC Paris became involved in the project from its initial stages in September 2023.
The unique feature of Emilia Pérez lies in its production: nearly the entire film was shot on blue screens around Paris. One of the main post-production challenges was to ensure visual consistency, carefully integrating effects across more than 350 shots to make them seamlessly invisible.
Rodolphe Zirah, VFX Supervisor, and Lise Fischer, 2D Supervisor, explain that nearly every street, outdoor scene, and even some indoor settings required digital visual effects. In the opening scene with Zoë Saldaña, for example, only a few shopfronts were physically present. Everything else—buildings, trees, even the ground—was digitally created.
Likewise, the high-speed chase scene, which is largely CGI, showcases the significance of the VFX work. This complex scene required an in-depth planning phase and close collaboration with the director.
To highlight the extent of their work, Rodolphe and Lise note that over 65% of the images in the trailer were digitally altered.
Christophe Courgeau, Digital Environments Supervisor, explains that numerous tests and iterations were needed to balance realism with a stylized aesthetic. The virtual environments were designed to evoke an imagined version of Mexico, with digitally created settings like Emilia’s house, the prison, and entire landscapes.
Yann Nivet, VFX Producer at MPC Paris, coordinated over 70 artists over eight months, working with Édouard Valton, Executive Producer, to ensure each stage was completed within the allotted time and budget, especially in preparation for the Cannes Film Festival.
The close collaboration between the VFX teams and the image post-production teams proved essential. Paul Guilhaume, Director of Photography shot the footage, which was colour-graded on Resolve by Arthur Paux. Brice Leclert, Head of Post-production, emphasizes his team’s responsiveness in adapting the workflow and ensuring smooth coordination with the VFX teams.
The MPC Paris team is proud to have contributed to the creation of Emilia Pérez‘s captivating visual universe. We extend our thanks to Why Not Productions, Jacques Audiard, and Les Artizans for their continued trust.
